The mythical mountain Taygetos is the highest mountain in Peloponnese. Beautiful forests, gorges and ravines shaded by plane trees and flora with countless endemic plants are all features of this landscape that fascinate visitors. The summit, an almost perfect pyramid is considered as a sacred place from ancient times. Ascending to the summit was very important in ancient times and still is today.
Arrival Day. Get any flight arriving to Kalamata. Meet your guide in Kalamata airport or Kalamata bus station for a memorable drive throught the mountains to your hotel in the village of Anavryti. Settle into a charming family - run hotel and enjoy a welcome meze with ouzo overlooking a mountainous landscape. Your guide will make a briefing for what is going to be followed the next two days.
Meet your guide at 09:00 at your hotel. After breakfast depart on a 5 hour hike from Anavriti village to the refuge of the Hellenic Mountaineering Association. Our route, part of the European E4 trail takes us to the heart of Taygetos by traversing the eastern slopes parallel to the mountain ridge. We walk through fir and pine forests, gorges with running waters and natural springs. Halfway we fill our bottles with fresh drinking water and make a relaxing stop a light lunch with local traditional delicacies. As we arrive at the Refuge at 1550m the stunning panoramic view is a good reward of our effort. We enjoy dinner and a charming overnight at the refuge.
Wake up at the refuge and take time to enjoy a Greek breakfast. Today is the summit day. The summit is renowned for its pyramid shape and its unique views. Leaving behind the refuge we soon reach the alpine zone where the undergrowth of herbs and wildflowers are dominant with most important the endemic mountain herbs. We reach the so called ‘’immortal ridge’’ and in a few steps we touch the summit plateau. The view from the top is breathtaking as our gaze fades away to all corners of the horizon. We enjoy light lunch to get our batteries charged and we take the way back where we finish the day at noontime at Maganari spring for a transfer back to Kalamata.
